Ed Barton Memorial Hardy Souls Campout

Announcing the 18th

Consecutive Hardy Souls

Campout, October 21 to 23

By Bjorn Klingenberg

A few years ago the event was renamed, “Chief Paulina’s Motorcycle Expressway and Hardy Souls Campout” in honor of this renowned figure in Oregon history and the outstanding motorcycle road that bears his name and which is the favored approach route to Big Creek. The problem is that the Chief was not a good person. He killed everybody in sight that didn’t please him, both whites and natives. This year, the event has been dedicated to a more worthy person whom we all knew but who recently passed away from our midst, Ed Barton. It is now named, the “Ed Barton Memorial Hardy Souls Campout”. Nothing could be more appropriate to remind us all of this kind and capable man. As always, the event is held after the end of the deer hunting season on October 21 to 23, and before the elk hunters begin to roam. Last year, we had the wonderful site at Big Creek all to ourselves. Okay, so the bad weather had perhaps something to do with it, but the solitude was great. This year we plan for coooool weather with crispy grounds and plenty of sunshine. Ellen Barton has promised her participation offering her fine chili on Saturday night spiced a tad to combat the crispness of the night. The old crank gramophone will be in place to entertain unless the temperature falls to a level where the ancient mechanism refuses to cooperate, which has happened. For those first time participants the location of Big Creek Campground is 18 miles out of Seneca on road 16. There is a sign on the road. Some supplies can be had in Seneca, including gas. Join us; I know you’ll enjoy it! There is water on site should you need such and trout in the creek if you are fishingly inclined. Please notify me, Bjorn Klingenberg at 503-873-6777 or e-mail at bklingenberg@frontier.com, about your plan to attend.
