Box Canyon Horse Camp, USFS Road 19, approximately halfway between Westfir and Rainbow.
Fri, Jul 4, 2025 at 12:00 PM
Ride out to USFS Road 19, aka the Aufderheide Memorial Drive, for a celebratory gathering. We will meet at the Box Canyon Horse Camp at noon on Friday, July 4. The campground is located at 3,700 ft. and is approximately the halfway point from Hwy 58 (near Westfir) and 126 (near Rainbow). It is a free horse camp, located on the west side of the road, at the top of Box Canyon Pass, directly across from a USFS rental cabin. The site has 13 campsites and vault toilets. There is NO POTABLE WATER! So, bring your water supply, lunch, utensils, and a garbage bag. We will set up for lunch at a vacant campsite and have a small barbeque for your grilling pleasure! The merriment and camaraderie will be stellar! This area is within the McKenzie (541-822-3381) and the Middle Fork Ranger Districts (541-782-2283) of the Willamette National Forest. Consult their websites for more information:

Willamette National Forest - Middle Fork Ranger District (Hwy 58) (usda.gov)
USFS Road 19 has been designated as a Scenic Bicycle Route/Tour. The speed limit is 45 mph; watch out for bicycles, especially on the steep and twisty turns. This road is in better condition from Hwy 126 than from Hwy 58. If you ride a GS, take either route! However, if you are riding an RT or some other “Road Sofa”, you might want to consider entry from Hwy 126.
There is no signup or reservation required for this event. Show up or miss out on all the fun!!! Celebrate the 4th with friends in a gorgeous setting WITHOUT any fireworks to deal with!

What does your ride calendar look like for August? Well, there’s the Canal Creek campout on the weekend of the 9th and 10th. And the Central Western Region is having a lunch gathering on the 16th – location TBD. If neither of those events trip your trigger, how about a picnic along the McKenzie River?
We have reserved the group picnic shelter at the Hendrick’s Bridge County Park for Saturday, August 23rd. It’s a concept that Alice LeBarron suggested we pursue for the Central & NE Region and the Central Western Region. Of course, everyone is invited to the festival. The location is on Hwy 126 between Springfield and Walterville. Hendricks Bridge - Lane County Park.
We have the pavilion reserved for a multitude of bikers (up to 50 actually). Riders plan to meet there at 12 noon. This is a BYOLunch event. Water is available on site, as are restrooms. There are five picnic tables and a grill.
Alice will be leading a ride from Sisters to Hendrick‘s Bridge.
Each rider must purchase a parking permit on site for the event and display it on their bike. The day pass is $5.
No registration required. We hope to see you there. . . a LOT of you there!!! Alice & Mike.
